The National Coal Mining Museum for England located at Caphouse Colliery, near Wakefield, aims to keep coal mining alive by collecting and preserving the industry’s rich heritage, creating enjoyable and inspiriting ways for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to engage with the story of coal.
NCMM is a unique collection of buildings, displays and galleries above and below ground which reveal the hidden world of mining through the centuries. The Museum tells the stories of mining methods and machinery, the miners and their families drawing on thousands of items relating to England’s coal mining past, from mining art and literature to large mining machinery. Visitors put on a hard hat and battery lamp, step into the cage and descend 140 metres underground into the former mine workings of Caphouse Colliery, following an ex-miner guide through the chilly, dark tunnels to discover how coal was mined and moved to the surface by men, women, children, ponies and machinery through several centuries since mining first began here in the late 18th century.
The National Coal Mining Museum for England is a charitable company limited by guarantee and was established to ensure that this vitally important part of our national heritage is protected sustained for future generations.
We are building a talented and dedicated Board of Trustees to help the Museum move forward to preserve the mine – both underground and above ground and to find sustainable and sympathetic uses for the property such to fund the task of attracting more visitors and generate more income in the future.
We are now at an exciting but challenging point in the Trust’s development and this is the final fixed term appointment to join our dedicated executive team to ensure that the Trust’s vision for Museum is delivered. With the closing our last mine in England our Trustees believe that this is a truly unique, chance for an individual to combine their leadership and management skills, change management and influencing expertise, drive and energy to secure and ensure the Museum occupies its rightful place as a public asset and one of the UK’s most interesting and important Mining Museum. With this in mind, we are looking for applicants that not only have the right blend of relevant skills and experience to fulfil the role of Interim Museum Director but those who are also genuinely enthused by this unique opportunity.
